THE CHALLENGE,
TOWEL BY TOWEL.
The Bamford family has farmed organically for more than 45 years. Since opening its farm shop more than 20 years ago, Daylesford has grown to include a spa, holiday cottages, a cookery school and restaurants. As Will Dennis, Head of Sustainability, puts it: “Every single part of our business, from our kitchens through to our spa and our holiday cottages, produces laundry in some form.”
That adds up to around 1,000kg of laundry a day: spa towels and robes, cottage linen and chefs’ whites. The work was split across two sites, and most of the cottage linen was sent out. Daylesford wanted to bring everything into one central unit so it could control quality and environmental impact.
Sustainability was non-negotiable. The estate already runs on more than 2,000 solar panels and a 910kW biomass boiler fuelled by locally sourced wood chips. Any new laundry had to work with that setup.
THE SOLUTION,
POWERED BY BIOMASS.
Daylesford has used Miele for more than 15 years. Gillman’s designed and installed a high-capacity laundry using Miele Professional laundry equipment in the new unit, running 7 days a week. The standout feature is that the dryers connect directly to the biomass boiler. Hot water from the boiler provides the heat for drying, which cuts electricity use considerably.
Jamie Baron, Commercial Sales Manager at Gillman’s, said: “Integrating the biomass boiler with the tumble dryers is a unique benefit of the Miele Professional tumble dryers, I’m proud of the way our installation team handled the installation and commissioning of these specialist appliances.”

IN ACTION.
THE RESULTS,
WASH AFTER WASH.
With everything under one roof, the team can now handle the full 1,000kg a day in-house. Miele’s honeycomb drum treats fabrics gently, so premium towels and robes last longer and less goes to waste. Specialist programmes fine-tune spin speed and moisture levels, and automatic dosing keeps detergent use under control.
Charlotte Bloor, Assistant Facilities Manager, said: “The capacity provided by the Miele machines means we can get through so much more.” She added that the touchscreen language settings are “incredibly useful for our international laundry employees.”
Gillman’s continues to look after the equipment. Will Dennis says, “The aftercare service provided by Gillman’s is exceptional.”
“Most people think that sustainability and luxury can’t coexist, but we disagree. If we can provide both by producing laundry to a very high standard in a sustainable way, using renewable energy sources such as biomass, our spa customers can enjoy their time without worrying about the environmental impact.”
