Driven by Quality
The choice of detergent and wash process should match the type of fabric and the nature of the stains to achieve the best results. Proper dosing is essential to avoid residue buildup and ensure thorough cleaning. Additionally, the water temperature plays a significant role, with hot water being more effective for heavily soiled items and cold water being gentler on fabrics. The right detergent process also involves selecting the appropriate wash cycle to match the fabric type and soil level. Understanding and applying the right detergent process can lead to cleaner, fresher, and longer-lasting clothes.
When deciding on the correct detergent and wash process, it’s useful to understand the basics of the Sinner’s Circle, formulated by Dr. Herbert Sinner in 1959, this explains the four key factors in the cleaning process: temperature, chemistry, mechanical action, and time. These factors interact to achieve effective cleaning, and adjusting one factor requires compensating with changes in the others. For example, lower temperatures might need longer wash times or different detergents to maintain cleaning efficiency. This concept helps in optimising the laundry process for different fabric types and soil levels, ensuring thorough and efficient cleaning.
Detergents
In a washing machine, detergent plays a crucial role in cleaning clothes, they contain surfactants, which help remove dirt and stains. Essentially, detergent breaks down and lifts away dirt, ensuring your clothes come out clean and fresh.
We offer a range of detergents, ranging from well known brands such as Persil, high alkali one shot detergents, and more economical biological and non-biological detergents.
Emulsifiers
Emulsifiers are crucial in the laundry process as they help mix oil and water, enabling the removal of stubborn oil-based stains.
They work by allowing oils and fats to be broken down into smaller droplets. These droplets are then suspended in water, preventing them from re-depositing on fabrics.
This process enhances the overall cleaning efficiency, making it easier to remove grease and grime from clothes.
Stain Removers
De-stainers are used in the wash process to remove stubborn stains that regular detergents can’t handle. They work by breaking down and dissolving tough stains, such as tea, coffee, and bodily fluids, making them easier to wash away.
They can be chlorine-based or oxygen-based, with each type suited to different fabric types and washing temperatures.
We also have low temperature de-stainers available that work at a lower temperature, reducing the energy used to complete a wash cycle.
Fabric Softeners
Softeners are added during the rinse cycle to make clothes feel softer, reduce static and give the fabric that fresh smell we associate with clean laundry.
They work by coating the fabric fibres with a thin layer of chemicals that help to smooth and protect them. This not only makes clothes feel more comfortable but also helps to preserve the quality and longevity of the fabric.
We have softeners available from brands such as Comfort as well as our own formulations to cater for different fragrance preferences.
Chemical Disinfection
There are two common methods to disinfect laundry, chemical and thermal disinfection. Thermal disinfection relies on heating the laundry to a specified temperature and holding it above a specific temperature for a specified period of time.
Chemical disinfection can be used to reduce the energy required to hygienically disinfect laundry, and typically reduce the wash times.
We have chemical disinfectant products that are effective against MRSA, Clostridium Difficile and Covid 19.
Boosters
Boosters, also known as pH boosters, are used in laundry to increase the alkalinity of the wash solution. This higher pH level enhances the effectiveness of detergents by breaking down oils, fats, and other organic materials more efficiently.
Additionally, alkaline boosters can aid in the removal of tough stains and enhance the brightness of whites. Alkaline boosters need to be used in an automatic detergent dosing system as they are very strong.
Sours
Sours are used in the laundry process during the final rinse cycle to lower the pH of the water, making it more neutral.
This helps to remove any residual detergent and mineral deposits from the fabrics, preventing skin irritation and ensuring the clothes are comfortable to wear.
By neutralising the water, sours also help to maintain the longevity and quality of the fabrics. Sours are typically used alongside highly alkaline detergents and boosters.
Wet Cleaning
Wet cleaning detergents offer several benefits as an alternative to traditional dry cleaning. They are eco-friendly, using water-based cleaning methods that are safe for delicate fabrics like silks and wools. These detergents provide outstanding cleaning results for a wide range of garments, ensuring they look fresh and well-maintained.
The wet cleaning systems are efficient, with a rapid return on investment due to faster process times and less need for pre-spotting when compared to dry cleaning. Additionally, the detergents are designed to be gentle on fabrics while still effectively removing stains and dirt.
